Biography

Mark D. Stahlman is President of New Media Associates, Inc. a investment and technology advisory that provides strategic, financial and technology services focused on next-generation technology platforms.Its clients have included IBM, News Corporation, CMP Publications, CMP Ventures and Accel Partners.

Mr. Stahlman serves as an advisor, investor or Board member to Focal Point 3D Audio, Flogiston, Sandstorm Technologies, Safe Harbor Technologies, An Idea, Controlled Entropy, Robocast, Fusebox, Lumeria and HCC Media.

Mr. Stahlman has published and been interviewed often, including authoring over seven years of regular columns for Information Week, Computer Reseller News and Network Computing magazines.He has published Op-editorials in the Wall Street Journal, the San Jose Mercury News and the Boston Globe as well as appearing frequently on CNN, CNBC and Fox News.

In 1993, his Harvard Business Review article "Why IBM Failed" generated controversy because of its theme that growth in computer/networking occurs in 8-year cycles driven by a combination of Moore’s Law economics and open standards enabled next-generaton platform development.As forecast at that time, the sixth cycle of computing growthand value creation will enter its formative stage in 2001.

Mr. Stahlman is also a co-founder of the New York New Media Association and the New Media Laboratory and currently serves on their Boards.He has been an active participant in technology-driven business development in New York City and is credited with coining the term "Silicon Alley."

Before forming New Media Associates in 1993, Mr. Stahlman was an investment banker and securities analyst.From 1989 to 1993 he was a Partner at Alex Brown and Sons, where he organized the ABS New Media investment banking team -- aimed at taking a leading role in Internet IPO financing.This team was responsible for the Initial Public Offerings of America Online (AOL) and Creative Laboratories (CREAF), among others.In addition, while at Alex Brown, he followed the Personal Computer, Workstation and Local Networking industries and was named "Analyst of the Year" by both Upside and Electronic Business magazines.

Previously, Mr. Stahlman was a Principal at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., Inc. where he was a Senior Research Analyst.His "Black Book" reports on the Local Area Network and Desktop Computer markets combined original market and technology research with detailed financial analysis.Following the IPO of Sun Microsystems, Mr. Stahlman was among the first to consistently recommend the stock.His work on SUNW, as well as Compaq (CPQ) and Apple Computer (AAPL) won him an Institutional Investor All-Star Team award in the Microcomputer category.
