More About: GORDON KINDLON:
Gordon Kindlon recently returned from two years in Iraq
and Afghanistan, where he worked with the US-based non-profit, Mercy Corps,
and the UN. Gordon was interviewed on Conversations in April 2003 to discuss
his work as an activist supporting peaceful alternatives to invasion, and
soon thereafter was asked by Mercy Corps to join their team in southern
Iraq. While in Iraq, he managed the field office in Amarah, which cooperated
closely with Iraqi staff and community members to identify and implement
necessary local projects. Mercy Corps rebuilt 20 schools in Amarah during
that time, and identified and began several other projects with Iraqi
cultural institutions. Gordon left Iraq in April 2004, just prior to the
expatriate staff evacuation resulting from the first major US assault on
Fallujah. He then joined the UN in Afghanistan to help set up the
presidential election in southeast Afghanistan, where he remained until
March 2005. Gordon joins Conversations to share with viewers his personal
experiences with Iraqis and Afghans during these past two years; he feels
these, rather than political analysis and conjecture, are the most
meaningful insights he can share with friends upon his return.
