"Wikileaks and Academia" -- A panel recently convened by the
faculty of Columbia University's School of International and
Public Affairs (SIPA), featuring Emily Bell of Columbia's
Journalism School, Gary Sick, Middle East Institute scholar
and former National Security Council member, SIPA Professor
Austin Long, SIPA Vice-dean Robert Lieberman, and Professor
Hassan Abbas of the South Asia Institute.
The symposium was presented a week and a half after the school apprised students of an unofficial warning from an Obama administration official that evidence of reading the recently-leaked State Department cables could jeopardize their future careers in US foreign service. |

Five OClock Shadow
A Five O’Clock Shadow Special Report. More than fifty people
are already dead in Côte d’Ivoire, with the toll expected to
increase during the west African nation’s ongoing
post-electoral conflict. Sitting president Laurent Gbagbo
has ordered the expulsion of French troops and United
Nations peacekeepers, and the US is evacuating embassy
personnel, following attacks on a UN compound by militants
opposed to the internationally-recognized election victory
of Alassane Ouattara.
Gbagbo and his associates are facing sanctions and opposition from the UN, western nations, and the African Union. But his militant supporters, such as Charles Blé Goudé, are calling for Ivorians to “make themselves ready for this combat. We are going to totally liberate our country." Also, the latest news and a review of the history and economics of the post-colonial crisis in "France-Afrique"– including audio readings of the latest relevant State Department cables released by WikiLeaks. |

Help With the Flash Based Player
The new Flash-based MP3 player software is part of this web page. If you go to another web page, its gone. To listen to a show and look at other web pages, you'll need to open either a new tab or a new browser window. Then too, you can not use the player and instead download most shows to your computer where you can play them with any audio software.
When you first click on the Play button:
- The show should start playing almost immediately
- The Play button moves to the right and changes into a Pause button, with two vertical lines (see the screen shot below). You can use it to pause playback at any time.
- The show downloads in the background at a speed that depends on the speed of your Internet connection. You can see this as a gray stripe that moves from left to right. In the picture below, about half of the show has downloaded. When the horizontal line changes from white to light gray, the show has fully downloaded to your computer. It continues to play during the dowload process.
While the show is playing:
- You can drag the dark gray section of the slider left and right to move forward and backward within the show.
- The elapsed time is displayed on the far right at hh:mm:ss. In the picture above, the show has been playing for 10 seconds.
The player does not show the total time of the show and does not offer a volume control.
