Joseph Carranza - 10-28-09 Air date Mr. Joseph Carranza is a member of WBAI, and is involved in the Community Outreach Program for WBAI. He is involved with ANSWER COALITION, and can be seen tabling for ANSWER at the south end of union square park. He is involved with Revolution Books, and regularly attends meetings at the Revolution Bookstore on W 19 st. in NYC.

My name is Joseph Carranza, and I am a member of a group called the "No Police State Coalition." I am writing to you to request a spot on your newspapers community events calendar to draw attention to our free speech events at Union Square South. The No Police State Coalition is a group consisting of people of moderate means, workers, homeless people, gays, union members, socialists, squatters, teachers and activists, who are alarmed and outraged at the direction the nation is heading, and we take to the streets with our bullhorns and banners three times a week with an educational army, to convey our message to the American Public. Our efforts have not gone unnoticed though,......In the past year, the No Police State Coalition has been forced to endure the incessant "Tactical Brutality" of the NYPD, which has involved the harassment and sabotage of our free speech events at Union Square,....the confiscation and theft of our property, (approximately $5000 dollars worth ) the arrest of our members, ( approx. 25 arrests ) false charges being bought against those arrested and false police reports in addition to those illegal arrests, as well having to suffer several rather spectacular displays of police brutality,......and of course, the outright judicial hostility that has been shown to our group when we have appeared in court in connection with those aforementioned arrests and incidents. Yes, it's been quite a year, but the freedom fighters of the No Police State Coalition have stood their ground, maintained our resistance to police state type political repression and totalitarian rule,.....in the biting cold of long and brutal winter, and now in the heat of the summer sun, we have held our ground and now it seems that the Free Speech Events at Union Square are becoming a genuine New York Tradition! That is why we're asking for your help. If possible, could you please squeeze a small statement about our event? I'm no expert at how to word this type of message, but I would imagine that it might read something like this: Free Speech Events at Union Square South The "No Police State Coalition" conducts a free speech open forum at the South end of Union Square Park in NYC, every Mon. and Thurs. from 4 to 7 PM, and Saturday from 2 PM until dark. Participation is free, and all are welcome. Saturday night is also movie night. Join us for a free film, discussion to follow. Thank you in advance for your attention to this e-mail. Joseph P.
